Liverpool using rugby training to toughen up Alisson

Head to Liverpool’s training ground, witness the £65 million recruit shouldering a rugby tackle bag into his coach and you can be forgiven for thinking he is a prop forward readying for the Six Nations rather than a Premier League fixture.

Such techniques have long been the norm at Melwood and elsewhere, keeper coach John Achterberg acclimatising his charges to the bruising contact of our league.

Alisson, who was briefly the world’s most expensive goalkeeper when he moved for £66m from Roma, will face a physical test when Liverpool visit to Crystal Palace tonight.
