ngel Di Maria’s translator has lifted the lid on the reason why the Argentine decided to quit Old Trafford after just a single season at the club.
The 29-year-old joined United in August 2014 from Real Madrid for a fee of £59.7m but failed to live up to expectations, scoring just four goals in 32 games in all competitions for the ‘Red Devils’.
At the end of the 2014/15 season, Di Maria was voted United worst signing of the campaign and he was quickly shipped off to French side PSG at a considerable loss.
However, it has now emerged that the former Benfica winger was never happy at Old Trafford, with the play’s translator Debora Gomes tellin ‘Esporte Interativo’: ‘He was unhappy at the club. Firstly, he couldn’t communicate with anyone.
‘And second because he realised the club bought him not because the club thought ‘oh, he will bring titles to us because he is a good player’.
‘No. Because they simply wanted to sell his shirts. This I heard inside the club, the people talking. ‘Di Maria sells T-shirts, so let’s buy him’. So he was not happy.’
Di Maria has since gone about rebuilding his reputation in the French cital, whilst Gomes believes that United have lost sight of what is really important in football.
‘So the players, when they try and decide who to buy, they will meticulously say: ‘what will bring more money?
‘They are not thinking of bringing joy to the fans. They are thinking of selling.’
