Zinedine Zidane’s side’s start to the season is worse than any of those recorded by Rafa Benitez
Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini, with no manager having recorded such a poor return since the days of German Schuster.
After 14 games of the La Liga season, Real have managaed to take just 28 points, only two more than the number that saw Schuster sacked (26).
“Right now, it isn’t possible to win at the Camp Nou,” said a disheartened Schuster back in 2008, shortly prior to being replaced by Juande Ramos ahead of the first ‘El Clásico’ of the 2008/09 season. Whether Zidane’s future will follow the same path though, is very much up for debate.
With last season’s successes already forgotten, pressure is beginning to mount on Zidane, with Real failing to take advantage of Barcelona’s draw with Celta Vigo on Saturday. In the best case scenario, Real will go into ‘El Clásico’ five points behind arch-rivals Barca, with ‘Los Blancos’ only set to play one more league game before the heavyweight clash. That game will come against Sevilla, with goal difference currently the only thing separating the teams in the table. Real’s other game against Leganes will be moved, owing to their involvement in the Club World Cup.
Althought it seemed unimaginable following their Spanish Super Cup triumph, Real will finish the year below their rivals in the table, the only question is how far below and whether will they still have hope of retaining their title come 2018.
