Cristiano Ronaldo has been included in Real Madrid’s 20-man squad for Tuesday’s clash with Borussia Dortmund after returning to training on Monday.
The Portugal superstar played no part in the capital club’s 4-0 La Liga victory over Real Sociedad on Saturday night because coach Carlo Ancelotti did not want to risk aggravating the knee injury that has troubled the player in recent weeks.
Whether Ronaldo will actually feature at Signal Iduna Park remains to be seen. Los Blancos travel to Dortmund with a 3-0 advantage and are 2.19 favourites to win against the out-of-sorts Bundesliga side.
A statement on the club’s website read: “Cristiano Ronaldo joined the training session on the pitch [as] Madrid returned to training and completed a recovery session two days before the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund in Signal Iduna Park.
“Carlo Ancelotti oversaw Casillas and Jesus, who worked on specifics with goalkeeper coach Villiam Vecchi, and outfield players Cristiano Ronaldo, [Angel] Di Maria, [Alvaro] Morata, [Raphael] Varane, Casemiro, [Fabio] Coentrao and Castilla striker Willian Jose. The 11 players who started in the rout against Real Sociedad worked inside Madrid’s facilities, while [Sami] Khedira, [Alvaro] Arbeloa, Jese and Marcelo were the absentees.”
If Ancelotti does decide to again rest Ronaldo he can take encouragement from the fact that his side have not dropped a single point when the Champions League’s leading scorer has not played.
