Rory McIlroy cemented his place as Masters favourite after a fantastic final-round 65 at the Houston Open in his last tournament before Augusta.

The Northern Irishman did not set anyone’s pulses racing in the first three days as he attempted to shake off some competitive rust after a three-week break, but on Sunday he looked like a man possessed.

Starting the day in 37th place, the 10.00 Masters favourite was free from the shackles of pressure and as such played a beautiful game.

Everything fell into place for McIlroy, who hit 13 greens and averaged 309.3 yards of the tee. By the time he signed off his card he had broken into the top 10, capping off a truly sublime display.

“It was a good way to end the week, obviously,” said McIlroy, who played in the day’s first threesome. “I wanted to shoot something in the 60s at least today to give me some positive vibes going into Augusta. I played really well, played really solid from tee-to-green again.”

“I couldn’t have asked for anything better than this with regard to Augusta,” added McIlroy, who has yet to finish in the top 10 of the Masters from his five appearances.

If McIlroy can continue in this form at Augusta then he really will be the man to beat.
