Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claims Wayne Rooney is his only transfer target ahead of the new Premier League season.

Rooney, who was sent home from Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia due to injury, handed in a transfer request at the end of last season but the reigning champions have insisted the striker is not for sale.

Chelsea confirmed reports on Wednesday that they had submitted a bid for the England international and rejected speculation that they had offered a player-plus-cash deal involving Juan Mata or David Luiz.

Mourinho has now spoken of Chelsea’s move for Rooney and revealed the former Everton striker is his side’s only remaining transfer target ahead of the start of the new season.

Speaking after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Singha All-Stars 1-0 on their pre-season tour of Thailand, Mourinho said: “We want the player. Now it’s up to Manchester United.”

When asked if it is Rooney or bust, he simply replied: “Yes.”

He added: “I think that this situation is clear – nothing is a secret any more.

“The official bid is just about a certain amount of money and doesn’t involve players. We made the bid and now we have nothing more to say.”

Now Chelsea have made their interest in Rooney known the west Londoners are expected to return with an improved offer for the forward, while Premier League rivals Arsenal and French champions Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be monitoring the situation.
