Midfielder Xabi Alonso has ended speculation surrounding his future by putting pen to paper on a new two-year deal with Real Madrid.
The Spain international had been due to fall out of contract at the Bernabeu at the end of the season and a number of clubs were linked with moves for the playmaker.
Italian giants Juventus, French league leaders Paris Saint-Germain and English sides Manchester United and Chelsea were all credited with an interest in the Real star, but Alonso has now ended the speculation by signing a new deal.
Alonso confirmed he had agreed new terms via his official Twitter account.
He tweeted: “I’m delighted and honoured to announce that Real Madrid will continue to be my home for another two years.”
The Spanish media have reported that Alonso’s new deal is worth £4.9million a season, and he has an option for an extra year.
Real travel to Espanyol on Sunday and will be desperate to secure the win to close the gap on Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who are the joint league leaders and five points clear of Los Blancos.
Atleti and Barca play each other on Saturday, meaning Real will be able to move closer to at least one of the two pace-setters if they can take all three points at Espanyol.
