Despite winning FA Cup, Wigan Athletic will not be part of Premier League next year.

The Latics lost 4-1 to Arsenal, with goals from Lukas Podolski, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey, to shorten their celebrations after successfully beating Manchester City in Saturday’s cup final.

They needed at least a point to have a fighting chance to stay at top-flight, but the loss keeps them four points off safety with only one match left to play.

With Roberto Martinez’s men dropping to the Championship, next season will be packed as they will have a 46-game schedule, not including their run in the Europa League.

Wigan have been known to make late comebacks to survive in the league. However, they failed to repeat the feat this year despite winning against stumbling teams like Newcastle United and Norwich City.

Now, their season will be seen as bittersweet after winning their first FA Cup but falling to the Championship.

It will also increase speculation of Martinez’s departure following his links to the vacant Everton job.
