Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed he will not make another bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in January, but he will add to his squad if a ‘special’ player became available.

The Gunners head into the New Year top of the Premier League table and some of their rivals will be looking to add to their squads in order to compete with the Gunners for silverware.

Manchester United’s form has improved in recent weeks, and manager David Moyes looks set to add to his squad as he eyes a late charge for the title. Both Chelsea and Liverpool will be also interested in new signings as they hope to keep up with Arsenal.

Wenger’s men have still managed to maintain their early pace, despite Olivier Giroud having to endure most of the work himself as a lone striker, and the Frenchman is thought to have made a new forward his priority.

The north London club broke their transfer record to add Mesut Ozil to their ranks in the summer, but they failed in a bid to sign Suarez from rivals Liverpool.

Impressive displays from Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini have helped the Gunners but Wenger admits that the club will look to bring in another high-profile player, should one become available.

He said: “We are as many clubs, certainly on alert. If something special turns up, we will not turn it down.

“But we are not as well desperate because we have a big depth in our squad. We have shown that because our midfield for example at West Ham and at Newcastle was completely different. We changed three players and we still managed to have a very strong team.”
