Andre Villas-Boas has told Real Madrid that Gareth Bale is not for sale following claims a deal is close to be finalised for the Tottenham star.

Tottenham’s chances of winning silverware and qualifying for the Champions League would suffer a big blow if Bale was to leave White Hart Lane, and Villas-Boas is determined to keep hold of him.

However, Real are refusing to give up with their attempts to strike a deal before the transfer window closes and are ready to pay a world-record fee to secure his signature.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen to build a squad capable of winning the title back from Barcelona, while he also has his sights on European glory, and Bale is his number one target.

Ancelotti said last week that talks had begun with Spurs, but such comments have angered Villas-Boas, who says the club deserve some respect and that the player is not for sale.

“These rumours of an imminent transfer are not true,” Villas-Boas revealed. “The only thing we have communicated with Real Madrid is that he is our player and he is not for sale.

“Gareth is a guy I really like. We are talking with Real Madrid because there is respect between the two clubs following the transfer last season of Luka Modric.

“We are building a great team for next season. We envisage the future with Gareth. But we know that in football anything is possible.”

Tottenham continued their build-up to the new season with a 5-2 defeat against Monaco. Bale was left out of the side through injury and it could be a sign of things to come if the wing wizard did move on.
