Manchester United have failed with a £28million double bid for Everton duo Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.

Former Everton boss David Moyes has been heavily linked with both players since taking charge at Old Trafford and has finally made his move following weeks of speculation.

However, Everton clearly value the players much higher and it is thought it would take a bid of £28million just to secure the signature of Belgium international midfielder Fellaini.

United are not the only club known to be keen on Fellaini as both Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with move over the summer and a bidding war could be on the cards ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Red Devils have a void to fill in midfield following the retirement of Paul Scholes and after missing out on Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara they have now switched focus to Fellaini.

Meanwhile, Moyes also wants more competition at left-back and the addition of Baines would put pressure on Patrice Evra in the United backline.

News of the failed bid comes after Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho hinted he is ready to launch another move to try and lure striker Wayne Rooney away from Old Trafford.

United have already rejected two bids from Chelsea but a third in the region of £40million appears to be in the pipeline as Mourinho refuses to take no for an answer.
