Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders have confirmed the signing of American international Clint Dempsey from Tottenham.
Dempsey spent just one season at White Hart Lane after joining Spurs from Fulham in a deal worth £6million and the move comes as something of a surprise.
Dempsey chipped in with a very respectable 12 goals from 43 appearances last season and the signing also represents a huge coup for Seattle, who are desperate to reward their fans with some silverware.
The Sounders’ majority owner Joe Roth believes it is a great deal for the club and says it will help take them on to the next level.
“This is a historic day for Sounders FC and our fans,” he revealed. “Clint is a world-class soccer player who can take this club to a higher level.
“We have been consistent in our message to the fans that we will spare no expense to win trophies.”
Dempsey’s departure means Tottenham are another striker down just two weeks before the Premier League season gets underway, and boss Andre Villas-Boas will have to move quickly.
Roberto Soldado is set to sign but as doubts surround the future of Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, Villas-Boas may need more than one striker ahead of the transfer window closing on September 2.
