Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho feels he is “lucky” to play with someone of Luis Suarez’s quality who has helped the club make their superb start to the season.

Suarez looked set to leave Merseyside over the summer after pushing for a move to a club playing Champions League football but the Reds stood firm and blocked his attempts to change clubs.

And, after finishing his ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, the Uruguay international hit-man has been the stand-out player in the Premier League with an amazing 17 goals from just 11 appearances to date.

He appears to be back in love with the club and the Anfield faithful adore their South American hero, and France international Sakho says it is tough to face the former Ajax man just in training.

“When we are on opposite sides we have one-to-one situations where sometimes he comes out on top, other times I do,” he told Liverpool’s official website.

“All I do is try and play my own game and show my own qualities, but for sure, it’s tough against Luis because he’s a world-class striker.”

And, on the day that it was revealed that Liverpool have opened negotiations with Suarez about a new deal which could make him highest-paid player in the club’s history, Sakho admits he is glad to have the talented forward in the ranks.

“It’s true that it’s always better to have him on your side than be up against him,” he added. “I’m lucky enough to play with him.”
