Real Madrid in semifinal of Champions League after a 3-0 victory over Galatasaray.
Madrid threatened right from the start and had a two-goal lead before the 30-minute mark with nets by Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.
Gonzalo Higuain scored the team’s third and sealed the victory for the La Liga outfit, leaving the Turkish outfit with so much to do when the second leg moves to Istanbul.
Despite the domination, the visitors started fairly well at the Santiago Bernabeu. Wesley Sneijder, Hamit Altintop and Selcuk Inan were pushing forward to aid Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz.
However, the hosts scored the first goal in the 9th minute. Mesut Ozil fed Ronaldo the ball as he scooped a shot over Fernando Muslera to give Real the lead.
Drogba responded well and had his effort pushed wide by Diego Lopez. Emmanuel Eboue also had a chance but he had his shot go straight to the keeper.
And, in typical fashion, the Los Blancos responded with a goal. Thanks to slack defending, Michael Essien put the ball in the box and with Galatasaray defenders failing to react, Benzema picked up the ball and slotted it into the net.
The visitors made some changes in the second half, with Sneijder being subbed off for a more defensive tactic. However it depleted any offensive threat that Gala had.
Things went from bad to worse as Xabi Alonso curled in a free kick that found Higuain to head home a third for Madrid and dampen the Turks’ hopes for a second-leg comeback.
