Manchester United boss David Moyes has written an open letter to the club’s supporters thanking them for their backing in what has been a troublesome season for the Premier League side.

United have struggled badly following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and will do well to qualify for the Champions League next season after several poor results and performances.

There have been some isolated calls for Moyes to be axed, but on the whole the Scot is delighted with the backing he has received from the club’s fans and has promised their faith will be rewarded eventually.

“While I knew that this job would be a challenge when I took it on, the difficult season we have experienced was not something that I envisaged, which I am sure is the case as well for you supporters – and my players, staff and I are desperate to compensate for that,” Moyes wrote.

“You are accustomed to seeing a successful Manchester United and the backing you have given the players and me throughout the season has been incredible.”

He added: “Everything we need have been through will make us a better, stronger team and club in the future.

“Over the years you have seen great winning sides here and, in time, I have absolutely no doubt that we will see great winning sides here again.”

United are in action against West Brom this weekend and have the chance to jump above Everton into sixth if they can take all three points.
