Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool will not give up in the title race despite Manchester City wrestling back the initiative over the weekend.

Liverpool are still two points clear of Chelsea after losing to Jose Mourinho’s men on Sunday, while City are a further point behind but do have a game in hand.

If City win all their three games then they are likely to win the title on goal difference, even if Liverpool win their last two, but Rodgers is refusing to give up.

Both City boss Manuel Pellegrini and Chelsea chief Mourinho have played down their side’s chances and Rodgers just says the Reds will focus on the next game.

That will be at Crystal Palace a week tonight, where Liverpool are 1.40 favourites, and it looks like being a game that the Reds will have to win to keep their title hopes alive.

“City will now feel they can go on and win their games,” Rodgers revealed.

“We’ll focus on the next game (at Crystal Palace) and continue with that positive mentality that we’ve had throughout the season – because that’s the reason why we are where we are.”

Meanwhile Rodgers is also backing Steven Gerrard to bounce back following his slip that led to Chelsea’s opening goal.

“He has picked up this club so many times and it was just really unfortunate because he slipped at a crucial moment and it was right on half-time,” he added.

“There’s certainly no blame because we are in the position we are in now because of him; he’s been instrumental for us this season.”
