Inter Milan president Erick Thohir insists that boss Walter Mazzarri has his full backing as they head into the final game of the season against Chievo on Sunday, despite an ultimately disappointing season.
Mazzarri has failed to secure Champions League football this term – the goal that was set for him and his team to achieve at the start of the campaign – and will have to settle for fifth place and Europa League action next season.
Despite failing to break into the top three in Serie A, the Italian remains the top candidate to take the Nerazzurri through in the new campaign and will be provided with the funds to enhance his squad over the summer.
Thohir believes that he has the right man at the helm, although the 52-year-old has come under criticism from some sections of the home support.
Thohir said: “I continue to say that Mazzarri will remain with us because he has a contract and we have to give him a chance.
“We will make new acquisitions this summer and Mazzarri will have new players and will be able to change his tactical formation.”
Sunday’s game will provide an emotional moment for veteran Javier Zanetti as he calls time on his illustrious playing career and prepares to move into a director’s role with the San Siro outfit.
Esteban Cambiasso, Walter Samuel and Christian Chivu are others that will not be continuing their careers at the Giuseppe Meazza with supporters undoubtedly expecting a summer of change in the playing staff.
