Norwich manager Chris Hughton has backed club-record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel to hit the goal trail in the Premier League in the second half of the season.

The Netherlands striker made the move to Carrow Road in the summer for £8.5million from Sporting Lisbon but he has struggled so far in England, with injuries disrupting his progress.

He managed to score on his debut against Everton but has failed to find the back of the net since as the Canaries have hit just 18 goals in 22 matches so far.

Van Wolfswinkel is now fit again and Hughton is sure the striker will be among the goals in the months to come.

“What you have to remember with Ricky is that right now if he had not had his injury problems, he would be in full flow,” he said.

“Of course, it is a concern about the strikers. We want to be winning football matches but I know Ricky is working so hard.”

Norwich, who are 12th in the Premier League, managed an important victory on Saturday over Hull – a result which leaves them five points clear of the relegation zone, and they are next in action when they host Newcastle (Norwich 2.74, Newcastle 2.28, draw 3.38) next Tuesday.
