Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar believes the return to goal-scoring form of key striker Christian Benteke is great news for Paul Lambert’s side as they aim to stay in top half of Premier League in second half of the season.

The 23-year-old has struggled for large parts of the campaign after an impressive debut season for Villa in 2012-13 when he scored 19 league goals.

He failed to find the back of the net for 11 successive games but finally ended his drought by against Arsenal last week and then followed that up with another in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool on Saturday, which moved the Midlanders up to 10th place.

Vlaar knows the Belgium international is an important player for Villa and hopes he can now go on to enjoy another prolific spell in front of goal.

“It has not been easy for him the last few months but he scored against Arsenal and he scored again on Saturday so it is starting to come to him again now,” the defender said.

“It is really important for the team as well.”

Andreas Weimann was also on target at Anfield and Vlaar was equally as pleased for the Austrian forward, who he hopes can also contribute goals in the second half of the season.

He added: “I think Andi [Weimann] scoring was also very important for him and for the team. It has not been an easy season for him as well, so I hope that scoring at Anfield gives him a real boost to carry on.”

Villa are next in action when they host local rivals West Brom in the Premier League next Wednesday.
