Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham believes his side can use Saturday’s win at Southampton as a springboard to push for survival.

Juan Cala scored the only goal of the game at St Mary’s as Cardiff picked up a vital victory on the road. The win leaves Cardiff three points adrift of safety in 19th place in the Premier League table with four games remaining.

Whittingham admits the victory was crucial to Cardiff’s hopes of avoiding the drop and hopes they can now mount a serious bid to move away from the bottom three.

“It’s huge for our confidence,” he said. “It’s up to us now. We’ve got an okay run-in so it’s about what we do now.”
Cardiff had looked destined for the drop prior to their win on Saturday following a damaging 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

However, Whittingham insists there is a renewed feeling of confidence in the squad and hopes they can follow up the win over Saints with another victory against Stoke at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff are 2.42 to beat Stoke, the draw can be backed at 3.20, while the Potters are 2.90 to come out on top.

Whittingham added: “You get another three points against Stoke and then everyone’s starting to look behind them.

“Even more so after the win against Southampton. We need to take each game as it comes.

“It’s going to be a hard game again [against Stoke] but if we get three points again then you never know.”

Cardiff travel to Sunderland and Newcastle before hosting Chelsea in their final three Premier League games of the campaign.
