Andre Villas-Boas believes Tottenham’s battling 2-1 win away at Sunderland on Saturday proves there is sufficient spirit in the squad to compete for silverware this season.

After spending over £100million in the summer, Spurs were expected to compete for the Premier League title but the new faces have struggled to gel, especially in attack with them currently being one of the lowest scoring teams in the country.

Their mediocre start to the campaign included a demoralising 6-0 defeat to Manchester City in November but they showed their class in last Sunday’s draw with Manchester United before producing a steely performance to come from a goal down to win at Fulham in midweek.

Tottenham again found themselves behind at the Stadium of Light, but a Paulinho strike and a John O’Shea own goal saw them claim all three points on Wearside and move to within touching distance of the Champions League spots.

Next up in the league for the Lilywhites are fellow top-four chasers Liverpool at White Hart Lance before facing a tricky trip to face the season’s surprise package Southampton and AVB has now challenged his players to continue their recent battling form over the busy festive period.

“We had to dig in deep to take the game to the end but it has been a wonderful week for us, the players deserve a lot of credit for always showing that fighting spirit and coming back from that result against Man City,” he said after the win. “We felt we needed to bounce back well and get results after the City defeat, we needed to put a smile back on our and our fans’ faces.

“We have done that since then and we have to continue that in our next games against Liverpool and Southampton.”
