Shane Warne might yet play a key role in summer’s Ashes series, after Darren Lehmann said he would welcome his input on theAustralia squad.
After a tough recent spell for the Australia team, coach Mickey Arthur lost his job on Monday – just 16 days before the Test series against England.
Cricket Australia moved quickly to appoint a successor, with Lehmann handed a two-year contract and an instant position at the helm.
The former international batsman is seen by many as an excellent appointment, at a time when the Aussies need some inspiration.
Having suffered a 4-0 Test whitewash in India and then an early exit at the ICC Champions Trophy, they need a change in fortunes quickly if they are to challenge England this summer.
Lehmann might decide to call upon some former Australia stars in his attempts to rejuvenate the squad, who are already preparing for the five-Test series.
When asked about the prospect of getting spin legend and former Victoria team-mate Warne to help out, the new coach stated: “We would love him in the room.”
Lehmann added: “You don’t have a guy take 700 Test wickets and not use him if he is around the place. I will be after the past players to use their knowledge and guidance along the way.”
Warne is set to be part of the commentary team for the upcoming series, so will already be in England should he called upon to offer some wisdom to the tourists.
