Andy Murray is expected to return to action in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open next month as he attempts to be fit for next year’s Australian Open following his back surgery.

The world number four decided to go under the knife earlier this autumn to hopefully sort out his troublesome back injury once and for all and hasn’t played since helping Britain beat Croatia in their Davis Cup play-off in September.

The Scot had always hoped to be back in action by the end of the year as he looks to be ready for the first Grand Slam of 2014 in Melbourne at the end of January.

Murray, who has reached the final in Victoria in three of the last four years, is currently in Miami as he continues to build up his fitness and posted a picture of himself on his official Facebook page with the caption “sun is shining, back on the courts”.

The Qatar Open, which runs from December 30 to January 4, appears to be a realistic comeback tournament for the 26-year-old and reports say his camp are already planning for Murray to play in Doha before stepping up his preparations for the Australian Open.
