Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is adamant that it is too early to write off his side’s season.

Andre Villas-Boas’ men came into the campaign with silverware on their minds as they spent big thanks to the summer sale of Gareth Bale.

However, many players have struggled to settle at White Hart Lane so far and they have laboured in the Premier League, with their impressive Europa League form proving a welcome distraction.

After losing to Newcastle at home before the international break, Spurs were humiliated by Manchester City as they crashed to a 6-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. The north London side managed to bounce back from their defeat by winning 2-0 against Tromso in the Europa League on Thursday.

The centre-back insists that that win helped restore their confidence.

Spurs take on the in-form Manchester United at the weekend, and the Belgian defender believes they can still challenge if they go on a run, similar to the one of last season, when they went 16 games unbeaten.

He said: “You cannot write us off. We did not do well in this period last year with losses against Wigan and City and Arsenal.

“But we then had incredible months in December and January and I think that is what we are aiming for now. We want to do well in those two months and then I think we can be back easily because the top half of the table is so strong and everybody can win.”
