Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has asked striker Romelu Lukaku to explain why he left the club on loan to join Everton.

Recent reports suggest that the Belgian striker asked to move after the European Super Cup defeat to Bayern Munich, when he missed the decisive penalty for the Blues.

The 20-year-old didn’t believe had a chance of making the first team, with the likes of Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in front of him.

His apparent transfer request was rejected, but he was allowed to join the Goodison Park outfit on a season-long loan.

Mourinho believes it is good for both the player and the club that he spends time on loan at Everton, but he was quick to insist there is a reason he is at Everton.

He said: “I’m happy that he’s scoring goals against our direct rivals and he doesn’t score against us because he can’t.

“It’s phenomenal when you have a player even when he’s not playing for you he’s scoring against your opponent. That’s very, very good. Romelu likes to speak. He’s a young boy. But the only thing that he didn’t say is why he went to Everton on loan.

“My last contact with him was to tell him exactly that. ‘Why do you never say why you are not here?’ It’s something that he should say, because he likes to speak, the reason why he is not with Chelsea and he is in Everton.”
