British number one Andy Murray was delighted to overcome difficult conditions as he beat Tommy Robredo to advance into the third round of the Montreal Masters.

Murray was forced off court on Monday afternoon after heavy rain saw play cancelled with the match locked at 4-4 in the first set. The break didn’t unsettle the Scot as he quickly broke before taking the first set 6-4.

Spaniard Robredo showed plenty of heart to claim an early break in the second but Murray continued to fight and eventually won 6-4 7-5.

The changing weather conditions caused problems for a number of players on Wednesday and Murray admitted after his win that he had to dig deep.

He told Sky Sports: “It was tricky conditions and when the shadow came across the court it was tricky.

“Picking up the ball was hard and Tommy makes you work for every single point. I lost my timing a little bit in the middle of the second set but I came up with some good shots when I needed them towards the end.”

If Murray reaches the final in Montreal he will move up to second in the world ahead of Swiss star Roger Federer.

It will be the first time he has reached that level in six years but he must first get past Gilles Muller to have any chance of achieving it.

Luxembourg’s Muller beat Gael Monfils 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-4) although he is still the underdog for the match against Murray.

Murray is available at 1.11, while Muller is 6.00 for Thursday match.
