New Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has claimed he is nearly back to full fitness after making his debut against Tottenham Hotspur as a substitute.

The Red Devils were left disappointed after the World Cup winner missed the start of the season as he regained his fitness following his move from Bayern Munich.

Schweinsteiger picked up a calf injury during pre-season in the USA and Louis van Gaal was unable to select him from the start at Old Trafford last weekend.

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola claimed last week that the midfielder was never fully fit during his time at the club and the German is hoping to prove his worth in the next few weeks.

United secured a 1-0 win over Spurs thanks to Kyle Walker’s own goal as Schweinsteiger replaced Michael Carrick in the second half.

After making his debut, the former Bayern man has now thanked his team-mates for their help and is adamant he will be fully fit soon.

Schweinsteiger told the club’s official website: “It’s fine. I had three or four days in America where I had this injury and it was not so good for my rhythm.

“Now I feel much better and also the game was very important to play 30 minutes. The training sessions are very important for me, too. I’m getting better and I hope I will be 100 per cent fit in the next week.

“It’s getting better and better. Everything is something new for me – a new step in my life – and I’m really looking forward to settling in more and more with my team-mates.”

Schweinsteiger will be hoping to play his part in Friday’s clash with Aston Villa, with the Red Devils priced at 1.67 to win.

Tim Sherwood’s side are the outsiders at 6.00, while the draw is available at 3.75.
