Agnieszka Radwanska was delighted to secure a comeback victory over British hopeful Johanna Konta in Cincinnati after losing the first set.
The world number five lost the tie-break 7-1 as Konta claimed the opening set 7-6. However, the Polish star and former world number two responded in impressive fashion, winning the second set 6-4 before claiming the third 6-0.
Radwanska had never played the world number 13 before and she was delighted to secure a place in the Western & Southern Open quarter-finals, where she will take on Romania’s world number four Simona Halep. “She’s a great player.
We never played before, but I’ve seen many of her matches, and she’s played great tennis,” Radwanska said, as reported by Sky Sports.
“I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and it was an exciting match playing together for the first time. I’m just so happy with the win. It was a very tight match in the beginning.
“The tie-break slipped away too quickly, that’s for sure. I was able to break at the end of the second set, and I think I started to play better tennis and much more aggressive.”
Radwanska’s next big assignment will be the US Open, which begins at the end of the month, as she seeks a first ever Grand Slam crown.
The former Wimbledon finalist has never been beyond the fourth round in New York and she is 34.00 to claim this year’s US Open crown. Angelique Kerber is 11.00 to win the US Open outright and Halep is 9.50.
