Thailand’s Sunny Akani proved his win over world champion Mark Williams was no fluke after he beat China’s Zhou Yuelong on Tuesday at the International Championship.

The world number two was outplayed by Akani as he continues his rise up the world rankings.

Akani trailed 3-2 at one point before winning four frames in a row and he followed that up with a solid win over Zhou.

A 6-4 success moves him into the next round and he will now play England’s Allister Carter after he beat Stephen Maguire 6-4.

Carter and Maguire exchanged frames until the very end of the match when the former produced breaks of 75 and 107 to win.

There was a shock win for Jack Lisowski as he overcame Marco Fu thanks to a 6-3 scoreline.

Martin Gould also won by the same score as he proved too much for Barry Hawkins during the morning session.

David B Gilbert is also through to the next round following his narrow success over Scotland’s Eden Sharav.

A 6-5 win on Tuesday ensures he will now play Martin O’Donnell on Wednesday. O’Donnell produced the standout performance of the day to make sure he progressed, with a 6-0 win over Tom Ford catching the eye.

Matthew Stevens is also through to the next round of the International Championship after he did enough to beat Mark King.

He won 6-5 on Tuesday, while Yan Bingtao is also through after beating Ryan Day by the same scoreline.
