Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder as challenged British & Irish Lions duo George North and Alex Corbisiero to reproduce their summer form in upcoming domestic season.

Saints secured a double swoop for North and Corbisiero after they returned from their victorious tour of Australia with the Lions.

Warren Gatland’s side claimed a 2-1 win Down Under and the pair were heavily involved in the historic series.

North looked the most dangerous man in the back line for the Lions and scored a stunning solo try in the first Test in Brisbane, while Corbisiero was key in the scrum after being called-up late due to injuries.

Mallinder kept a close eye on the summer’s events and admits he was pleased to see his decision to make the signings vindicated.

The Saints chief is eager to see the England and Wales internationals push the Aviva Premiership side to glory after they were defeated in the final last year.

Mallinder said: “We watched the Lions tour with excitement, seeing what George and Alex accomplished.

“They’re good signings on paper and the important thing for us is that they’re good players for Northampton. That’s the challenge we face.

“George had a really good tour, not just the odd top game. In every game he played he had a massive impact. We’re hoping he can do that for us.

“Corbisiero is a bright bloke who loves to talk about the scrum. He’s very enthusiastic about it. On top of that, he’s also a very good player. That’s the type of player we want.”
