Edinburgh have completed the signing of Hawke Bay skipper Mike Coman, who has penned a two-year contract with the club.

Coman began his career with Canterbury before joining Hawke Bay, where he lifted New Zealand’s provincial Ranfurly Shield last month.

The 25-year-old will link up with Edinburgh next month once he has passed a medical and gained international clearance and head coach Alan Solomons is delighted with the capture.

“From speaking to people in New Zealand, and seeing footage of Mike [Coman] in action, I believe this is a very good signing for Edinburgh Rugby,” Solomons said.

“He has very good leadership skills, is a very solid number 8, and has all the requisite skills for that position.

“With his background I have no doubt that he will add value to this team, as we continue to build a solid foundation and a brighter future for this club.”

Meanwhile, Coman is looking forward to a fresh challenge and cannot wait to get started next month.

“I’m very excited to be joining Edinburgh Rugby,” he revealed.

“I’ve had some great experiences with Hawke’s Bay, in particular winning the Ranfurly Shield, but the time feels right to move on and try a new challenge.

“I still have a job to do with the Magpies but I’m really excited about what lies ahead in Edinburgh.

“All the research I’ve done tells me that it’s a club on the rise, and I can’t wait to get involved and make a positive contribution to their success.”
