Back in December 2014, Phil Brooks aka CM Punk dropped the bombshell when he announced that he’ll be joining UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and now it’s officially confirmed.
The former WWE superstar will test his pride and skills in his debut appearance in the octagon against Mickey Gall.
Although the event was officially booked for Miocic vs Overeem main event fight, the promo looks highlighting CM Punk’s debut on the 10th of September at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Gall and Punk will fight for welterweight division which definitely showcases the most awaited actions by both wrestling and mix martial arts.
In spite the huge hype for the said fight, Punk’s decision of joining the UFC attracted a lot of criticisms from sports icons and purists of whom believed all the athletes should meet the standard before being regarded as worth for this kind of sport.
On the other hand, despite not having the competitive combat sports experience, Punk is definitely one of the biggest stars in WWE which have had helped him get the spot on the UFC sphere. For Punk this is one of the biggest tests of his life and also his readiness to prove that doubters are wrong.
He never stepped in the octagon at least once but he’s not losing confidence in his upcoming fight. During the announcement, CM Punk gave his statement with full of determination that he’ll be able to win.
“Honestly, there’s no assuming. I’m gonna win” Punk said. “I’ve never been more confident about something in my entire life” he added.
While some fighters don’t get envious about Punk using his stardom to get a slot in UFC, it’s truly skeptical about how he’ll handle his first fight. In a statement given by UFC Heavyweight Alistair Overeem, he explained that the former WWE fighter will face a hard time especially that he’ll be fighting for welterweight of which the opponents are tough man.
“If he does bad, the whole world’s going to be on top of him but if he does good, the next guy will be in line for him, and the next guy is going to just keep on coming” Overeem said.
On the other hand, his opponent Mickey Gall also thrown thrash talks against Punk and said it will be over for WWE Superstar once he steps into the Octagon. Basing from records, Gall’s fights ended up quickly but Punk felt no pressure which put him out of his comfort zone.
“I’m not doing this to try to be a star. I’m doing this because I want to do it and was afforded the opportunity. It sounds like he’s getting mixed up in his own head, which is an advantage for me” Punk responded.
