Robbie Keane expects his final appearance for the Republic of Ireland against Oman on Wednesday to be an emotional night.
The LA Galaxy forward is the Green Army’s record goalscorer and appearance-maker after racking up 67 goals in 145 international outings since making his debut as a teenager against the Czech Republic back in 1998.
The 36-year-old will play one final match for Martin O’Neill’s side at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday and he is expecting the whole occasion to be an emotional affair.
“It has been an emotional week, it has been surreal. I have dreaded this day for a long time, but it is the right time for me,” Keane said.
“To the fans, it has been an incredible journey and something I will never forget. Wednesday night will be very emotional.”
The former Tottenham player, who has represented his country at three major tournaments, believes he has always played his best football for the national team, and he has described captaining his country as the defining moment of his professional career.
He continued: “All I ever wanted was to do my best for my country.
The defining moment of my career was being given the Ireland captain’s armband at the age of 26.
“I have played for many, many teams. I have put many, many jerseys on, but the Irish one always seems to fit me the best.
For me, it was always a comfort blanket, coming back with the national team. It has been my second home.”
Ireland are available at 1.20 to ensure Keane’s final international appearance ends in victory, while Oman are of offer at 16.00 and the draw is priced at 5.50.
