Jockey William Buick believes Masar is capable of stepping up in distance to challenge Saxon Warrior in the Investec Derby on Saturday.

The three-year-old has been in impressive form in 2018 and, after winning the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April, he then went close at the same venue earlier this month.

Masar, who is priced at 26.00 to win the Derby, had to settle for third in the 2000 Guineas event at Newmarket on May 5 with Saxon Warrior taking the top prize.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt will head to Epsom this weekend for the Investec Derby to renew his rivalry with Aidan O’Brien’s charge. He is set to step up in trip beyond a mile for the first time in his career and connections are positive over his chances.

Buick, who has ridden Masar on six of his eight outings, feels there is plenty more in the tank and has backed him to put in another strong showing at Epsom.

“He ran lovely in the Guineas and he should stay,” said Buick.

“He ran like he will definitely get further than a mile and obviously we meet the winner again, Saxon Warrior, but the Derby is the Derby – it is the ultimate race.

“It is a tough race and a lot needs to go right for you in it, whatever horse you are on.

“Masar has had plenty of racing experience, the balance and a really good attitude. He should relax nicely and we are very positive about him.”
