Trainer David Barron says Pearl Secret will sit out this Saturday’s Darley July Cup at Newmarket and will race at Glorious Goodwood instead.

Pearl Secret returned from a long absence to run in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but still managed to finish third despite being lightly raced.

It was thought the four-year-old, who lost his unbeaten record in the Nunthorpe Stakes last summer, would race in the Darley, but Barron is not completely satisfied with the ground.

Barron was also reluctant to run him over six furlongs and he is likely to go over five in the King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood instead.

“He wasn’t confirmed,” Barron said. “It wasn’t particularly the ground. He is quite a free-going horse, to test him on the July Course over six furlongs might have been something I didn’t really relish and I think Jamie (Spencer) didn’t relish it.

“We’ll hang back and he’ll go to Goodwood.”

Meanwhile, Shea Shea, who finished ahead of Pearl Secret but second to Sole Power in the King’s Stand, has been confirmed and the pair will lock horns again, this time over six furlongs.

Australia’s Shamexpress will also race following a disappointing Royal Ascot, while there are also other international raiders with the American Havelock and Bahraini star Krypton Factor also set to go.
