Jockey Andrea Atzeni believes his mount Postponed has enough class in his armoury to overcome a drop in trip for the Juddmonte International at York later this month.

Roger Varian’s charge is on the comeback trail having been forced to sidestep the defence of his King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month.

The trainer vowed it was a minor setback that forced Postponed to sit out the Ascot contest and that appears to ring true, with both Varian and now Atzeni upbeat on his chances of going to the Knavesmire for the Group 1 Juddmonte.

The York contest will see Postponed, winner of his last five starts, dropping back in trip to 1m2f.

Atzeni is confident his mount has the profile to overcome that inconvenience and maintain his winning sequence.

“He travels so well in his race and if he turns up like he has been, I think he’s just got too much class,” he told At The Races.

“Whether he’s better at a mile and a half? He might be but I think he’s got so much class that he can be just as good over a mile and a quarter.”

Postponed is 3.00 to win York’s Juddmonte International on August 17, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Highland Reel priced at 11.00.

Atzeni has been at Varian’s yard in Newmarket to put Postponed through his paces and he believes the five-year-old has quickly overcome his recent setback.

“It wasn’t a big issue last time, it was just one of those minor things and with a horse like him you wouldn’t want to risk it unless you’re 110-per-cent sure he’s spot on because there are so many races for him and hopefully we’ll see him at York,” he added.
