Rickie Fowler is the current leader at the Australian PGA Championship after carding a first round eight-under par 63 and the American was happy with his performance at the Royal Pines resort course.

Fowler, 24, made five pars to start his round but hit top form in the final eight as he hit six birdies to take a two-shot lead into the second day.

“It was a good solid start,” Fowler said after his round.

“A little bit slow on my front nine, but I just stayed patient and finally got a few things to go, made a couple of good up and downs.”

Masters champion and home favourite Adam Scott, who is making his first appearance in Australia since taking the major title at Augusta in April, also impressed with birdies at six, seven, eight, 12, 15 and 18 and is level on 65 and in second place with David McKenzie and Matthew Ballard.

Fellow Australian Nathan Green is in fifth place after a first round five-under par 66, while Kwon Sung-yeol and Jason Norris carded 67s.
