European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has named Jose Maria Olazabal and Sam Torrance as the captains for the Seve Trophy in France in October.

Olazabal will be in charge of the Continental Europe team and Torrance leads the Great Britain and Ireland side at St-Nom-La Breteche Golf Club, with the event running between October 3-6.

McGinley is preparing to captain Europe in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles next year but hopes Torrance can emulate his success in the Seve Trophy when he led GB&I to a 15.5-12.5 victory in the Seve Trophy in 2011.

McGinley said: “I am delighted to name Jose Maria and Sam as captains.

They are two men I have the utmost respect for and who I’ve benefited from over the years. I know they will do a fine job.”

Olazabal, who led the Continental team in 2005, described the chance to be captain again as a “big honour”, while Torrance is also looking forward to his first experience as a GB&I coach, having led the Europeans to Ryder Cup glory at the Belfry in 2002.

He said: “It’s a great honour. It’s been 11 years since I took charge of the Ryder Cup team and so you can imagine I’m really looking forward to this – it’s tremendous.”

The team tournament will be staged for a third successive time at the Paris venue, where GB&I will be looking to extend their winning streak to seven in the competition.
