Jenson Button believes staying at McLaren is the best thing to do for his career as he looks to remain with the team until the end of 2015.

McLaren have yet to take up the option they have with Button to extend his services for next year, but an extension on his current deal is expected to be announced in the next few weeks. Early rumours suggest the team may announce the deal at the Italian GP as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

The British team have had a poor season so far and are yet to register a podium finish as they struggle with a new design. Despite the disappointing results, Button is confident that his team can come through their problems and bounce back next season.

In 2014, McLaren will end their partnership with Mercedes before moving to link up with Honda and Button wants to stick around and enjoy a couple more years.

“I think when you are at a top team, any of the top three or four teams, it is better to stay put,” he told The Guardian.

“I think 2015 is a very exciting challenge for the whole team. It’s always interesting working with new partners and new engine suppliers but I think it’s also something necessary for this team and the future.

“It either breaks you or makes you stronger as a team and we’re definitely not broken. The atmosphere is very good and we will learn from the mistakes we made this year.

“This is a big family of a team, a massive family and one that wants to succeed in this sport and will succeed in the sport soon.”
