Scotland skipper Scott Brown has batted away suggestions from former England midfielder Paul Scholes that he wouldn’t have made it in the English Premier League.

Brown has been with Celtic since departing Hibs 10 years ago and he says he does not have any regrets about never having made the switch down south.

Scholes suggested he was surprised Brown had not tried life in England, while also musing on whether or not the Hoops skipper would have been a success had he taken such a step.

Brown says he was a big fan of Scholes growing up, but that he has never had any desire to leave Celtic – where he says his record speaks for itself.

“I don’t think [I’ve got a point to prove]. I used to watch him [Scholes], used to love him when I was growing up, he was a fantastic player but I’ve not got a point to prove to go down to England to play,” Brown told Sky Sports.

“I play in the Champions League, and we’ve had some great results against some top quality players as well. Everyone always mentions me not going down to England, it’s not about that.

“I chose to stay at Celtic for a reason, I’ve had the opportunities and the chances to go down the road but I’ve always enjoyed my playing time at Celtic and that’s why I’m still there.”

Scotland face England on Saturday in a vital World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park, with Gordon Strachan’s side desperately needing to take something from the game. England were 3-0 winners when they met at Wembley in November.

Scotland are 5.50 to win in Glasgow, where England are 1.73 and the draw is 3.50.
