Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has insisted it’s vital the club take their decent Champions League form into their Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils topped their European group thanks to a 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford on Tuesday night but their domestic form continues to be a concern.

Manager David Moyes and his men sit 13 points off frontrunners Arsenal in the title race and make the trip to the West Midlands on Saturday to face Aston Villa.

Having enjoyed a successful start to their European campaign, England international Rooney knows his side must build on that narrow win over Shakhtar when they make the journey to Villa Park this weekend.

He told The Sun: “The most important thing was to get back to winning ways and top the group, so we’ve done that.

“It could have been better at times but it was win at all costs – after the last two games we knew it was vital.

“The campaign has been good this year in Europe so we just have to try and get consistency in all our games, whether it is Europe or the Premier League.”

Already United’s chances of retaining the Premier League crown they won under Sir Alex Ferguson last season are looking slim but, with first-place Arsenal facing Manchester City and Liverpool travelling to take on Tottenham this weekend, a win for United against Villa could see them make inroads into their fellow title challengers’ leads.
