Manchester United have been hit by the news winger Ashley Young is facing a spell on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.

Young damaged his shoulder after landing awkwardly as he leapt over Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ flying attempt to win the ball on New Year’s Day.

It was an incident that left Reds boss David Moyes fuming as he felt that his side should have been awarded a penalty and Lloris should have been sent off.

Moyes has now suffered a double whammy after confirming the winger is facing a spell on the treatment table.

Young is definitely out of the FA Cup third-round clash with Swansea on Sunday, but Moyes cannot say for sure how long he will be out for.

“Ashley has got an injury that is going to keep him out for a time,” said Moyes.

“It is a shoulder injury he received in the challenge by the goalkeeper. I am not sure how long it will be.”

Injuries are the last thing Moyes needs at this moment in time as they fight to get back in the title race and he now has to decide whether it’s worth moving into the transfer market to draft in a replacement.

Elsewhere, key striker Robin van Persie remains on the sidelines with a thigh injury and again Moyes cannot say for certain when the Dutchman will be able to return.

When quizzed about the situation ahead of the Swansea game, Moyes told the gathered media: “We will let you know when he is ready.”
