Ryan Mason has admitted his surprise at how well the season has gone for him at Tottenham.

Harry Kane has made most of the headlines at White Hart Lane this term but Mason’s rise to prominence has been almost as remarkable.

The 23-year-old had not played for Spurs in the Premier League until this season, although he had made a total of 70 league appearances during loan spells at Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Millwall and Swindon Town.

He made his Spurs debut as a late substitute in a UEFA Cup tie against NEC Nijmegen in November 2008 but did not feature in a Premier League match for the club until the 1-1 draw at Arsenal just over seven months ago.

Since then he has featured in 28 league matches for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring his first club for the club in the 3-2 victory against Swansea City in March.

Mason has also broken into the England set-up, making his debut for Roy Hodgson’s side in the 1-1 friendly draw in Italy at the end of March.

He said: “It’s been a breakthrough season. I’m delighted how it’s been. The challenge now is to carry on and keep improving for next season.

“It is the first time I am going into a break feeling like a footballer. I have had 34, 35 games and that’s the first time that’s happened.

“After the next three games I’ll look forward to it, but probably within a couple of weeks I will be dying to get back into it and pre-season.”

Spurs visit Stoke City on Saturday and are 2.50 to win the match while a victory for Mark Hughes’ side is available at 2.87.
