Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has received a major boost on the injury front as star striker Daniel Sturridge has returned to first team training.

The Reds take on arch rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday evening and Rodgers would be delighted to see his striker return for that clash but they will not want to rush him and a place on the bench is the best that he can expect, and even that is doubtful.

Sturridge has had nightmare year with a succession of injury problems and has not featured for the Reds since early spring.

The player spent the summer in the United States and underwent surgery in an effort to put an end to the constant calf, thigh and hip issues that were casting a serious doubt over his future involvement in the game.

Whilst he is unlikely to feature at Old Trafford, he is being penned in for the up and coming Europa League games and the Premier League clash with Norwich.

Liverpool go into Saturday’s game at Old Trafford needing to bounce back after a 3-0 home thumping by West Ham before the international break and they need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible but United also go into the game on the back of a defeat having lost at Swansea 2-1.

United are clear favourites at 1.91 to win the match, the draw is priced at 3.40 and Liverpool are 4.33 to pick up a win and leap frog their arch rivals in the Premier League.

United currently sit in fifth place in the league five points behind leaders Manchester City, whilst the Reds are a further two places down the order on the same seven points.
