Steven Gerrard says his decision to leave Liverpool was prompted by Brendan Rodgers telling him he would no longer be a regular starter for the Anfield club.

Gerrard says he was not able to get the ‘same buzz’ coming off the bench for the Reds and so he made the decision to move to the MLS with La Galaxy instead.

The Liverpool skipper will play at Anfield for the final time on Saturday when Crystal Palace visit, as he edges closer to waving goodbye to the club he has represented for 17 years.

The 34-year-old says that during that time, he has lived for walking out with his teammates to go into battle.

“For me, I go to work on a Monday morning and I look forward to Saturday, to prepare to go to battle with some wonderful people – with good mates – and that’s my buzz,” said Gerrard.

Rodgers’ decision to inform Gerrard his opportunities would be more limited from the start of this season changed his outlook.

Gerrard had retired from England duty last summer in a bid to prolong his Liverpool career but once the Reds manager had outlined his vision, he quickly decided to move on.

According to Gerrard, it was the best move for all parties.

“When a manager gets you into the office and says that’s going to change and it’s going to become more limited – that’s when you make your decision.

“It’s not a selfish thing; coming on as a sub’s just not the same buzz so things have changed this year,” he added.

Liverpool are 1.46 to defeat Crystal Palace in Gerrard’s final Anfield appearance.
