Tottenham announced their first signing of summer transfer window with capture of Corinthians midfielder Paulinho after a £17million fee was agreed.

The Brazilian impressed a number of top European sides with his performances both domestically and for the national side.

FC Internazionale Milano and Real Madrid had declared their interest in the midfielder but he was convinced not only by the abilities of his new boss, Andre Villas-Boas, but by his compatriot, Sandro.

The 24-year-old revealed during the recent Confederations Cup tournament that his club had received a bid from the north London outfit and White Hart Lane would be his likely destination.

The former Bragantino man grabbed two goals during the tournament hosted in Brazil, playing a key role in helping Felipe Scolari’s side to clinch the title with a 4-2 victory over Spain in the final.

Villas-Boas will now looking to add further players to his squad ahead of the new season after narrowly missing out on Champions League football on the final day of last term.

The acquisition of Paulinho will most likely open up the door for Spurs to sell Scott Parker with a number of clubs already showing an interest in the England international.

Paulinho: “I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs. It’s a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham.”
