Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas confirmed the club is locked in talks with Willian over a move to bring the Brazilian to White Hart Lane.

Willian is free to leave Anzhi Makhachkala as the Russian side looks to cut costs and the north Londoners are leading the race for his signature ahead of the transfer window closing.

Liverpool looked favourites to do a deal at one stage but Spurs have nipped in and hope to have the player in the bag before the week is out after agreeing a fee in the region of £30million.

That would smash Tottenham’s transfer record for the third time this summer and spell out the club’s intentions to battle with the big boys and at least push for a place in the Champions League.

Villas-Boas would not say too much when quizzed about the move for Willian, but did confirm that talks are taking place between the two clubs as they try to hammer out a deal.

“I can’t really confirm anything regarding Willian. There is interest in the player and there have been conversations,” Villas-Boas revealed.

Spurs have already spent over £60million on new players this summer and Villas-Boas has hinted more could be on the way as he targets a new defender and attacker.

However the Portuguese has distanced himself from rumours suggesting that Roma midfielder Erik Lamela and Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao are close to signing.

“They have not signed for Spurs. Both of them are great, great players, but I cannot extend myself,” he added.
