Michael Essien is still on course for a move to Italian giants AC Milan, despite reports that his fitness was in doubt.

The Ghana international, once a key holding figure in front of the back four at Chelsea, has struggled to maintain a place in the side for the past two seasons, and has been deemed surplus to requirements by Jose Mourinho.

At the age of 31, Essien would relish the prospect of regular first-team football, and was expected to get that in Italy. Indeed, the Rossoneri had already offloaded Antonio Nocerino to West Ham on loan to make way for Essien’s arrival.

It all seemed straightforward bar a medical until reports surfaced in La Repubblica stating that the midfielder had failed tests on an old knee injury, and that Milan may now pull out of the deal, even though it was on a free move.

However, new reports emanating from football Italia suggest that Essien did in fact pass his supplementary test on the old anterior cruciate ligament problem, and has even passed a second round of stress tests while at the Milanello training complex.

That being the case, it looks highly likely that Essien will complete his signing on Monday before being put straight into the squad for next Sunday’s game against high-flying Torino at the San Siro.
