Burnley manager Sean Dyche has tipped new signing Johann Berg Gudmundsson to bring extra quality to the squad as they look to retain their top-flight status.

The winger earned a move to Burnley, who are priced at 1.83 to be relegated, from Charlton last week following his exploits for Iceland at Euro 2016.

The 25-year-old was integral to his nation’s historic performance at the competition in France as they made it to the quarter-finals before losing to France.

Dyche felt his quality in terms of leadership and ability on the ball would be a welcome addition to his squad and paid £2.5million with a further £1million to come in add-ons.

The Burnley boss, who guided the Clarets back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, insists that he was impressed with Gudmundsson’s immediate understanding of how Burnley play.

Dyche said: “In a side that had to work really hard he showed some good moments of quality. “We think he can add that to our group and he’s got a strong work ethic.

“I spoke to him about us what he thought and he understood how we played as a side and the feeling of the side and the belief in the side, and he wants to be part of that.”

The 45-year-old has praised the attitude of his new signing and believes he is up to the challenge of Premier League football.

He added: “He showed last year in a side that was having a tough time he had good assists and goals.

“He can play in a few different positions. “He’s got a thirst to do it, like most players who haven’t played in the Premier League. He wants to challenge himself with what comes to the Premier League.

“I spoke to him, he’s a bright lad with excellent English, he gets it and he understands.”
