Real Sociedad boss David Moyes has been dealt a blow after it was confirmed that striker Carlos Vela will need knee surgery.
The former Arsenal man tore the meniscus in his right knee during the 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday.
Sociedad’s Aritz Elustondo opened the scoring on Saturday afternoon but Moyes’ side were then powerless to stop Madrid’s attack. Goals from James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos as well as a brace from Karim Benzema ensured Madrid secured all three points.
Confirming the bad news about their star striker, a statement from Sociedad said: “During the game that took place in Madrid, Vela sustained an injury to his right knee.
“The tests done have revealed a tear in in internal meniscus. Having reviewed the situation, we have opted for the player to undergo an operation.
“Carlos will undergo surgery today and it will be carried out by doctor Mikel Sanchez. And we will issue a medical update once the surgery is completed.”
The news will come as a blow to Moyes who is trying to keep Sociedad away from the relegation zone. They currently sit in 13th place in the league but are only four points away from the relegation zone.
Reports have suggested they are close to agreeing a deal to sign Danny Ings but any move will depend on their top-flight status.
They face Celta Vigo in their next league clash on Saturday and they are currently 2.34 favourites to win the contest. The draw is priced at 3.20 with Dafabet, while Celta can be backed at odds of 3.03.
